Fish and Game Survey

The Chase residents have been asked by Fish and Game to participate in a subsistance surveys. They will be at the 1/17/2013 -CCC meeting to explain the process and if anyone wants to complete the survey at the meeting they will have staff available to complete the survey at that time in lieu of a possible home visit. The following is the letter to the CCC concerning the survey. During winter 2013 the Alaska Department of Fish and Game Division of Subsistence will be visiting Chase to conduct a Comprehensive Harvest Assessment Subsistence Survey. The study attempts to document the subsistence way of life in all its complexity including harvest, use, sharing, and participation by community members. Surveys take approximately a half hour to complete. Participating in this research benefits your community because it documents the importance of subsistence resources to residents. This project will help fulfill the Division of Subsistence mandate to provide customary and traditional subsistence harvest and use data for the Boards of Fisheries and Game process. Data from this project will also be used to measure the potential impacts of the proposed Susitna-WatanaProject. During our visit, residents will have the opportunity to relate their concerns about subsistence issues. At your January 17th Community Council Meeting I will give a presentation on the project. I will have several research staff available following the meeting if residents would like to participate in the survey at that time. We can then visit your community in February to conduct the survey with anyone we might have missed. Our goal is to interview all residents of Chase. 1/17/2013 CCC Meeting

A special election of the Chase Community Council will take place on January 17th at 6:00 PM at the Roadhouse at the Annual Meeting of the Chase Board of Directors. If you cannot attend the meeting, you may vote in-person at the Talkeetna Public Library from January 8rd to January 16th or by mail. To request a ballot by mail, please call Peg Foster: 733-1251 or Beth Pike: 733-1078. All residents of legal voting age whose primary residence is within the Chase Community Council boundaries are encouraged to attend the meeting and vote for three vacant Directors seats. Residents are encouraged to vote in person at the annual meeting. Candidates are Josh Klauder, Molly Mayo-Wood, Kim Sternberg and Ruth Strong

Chase Trail Groomer Information

Hello everyone who uses the Chase trail!

Recently, two groomers were purchased by the Chase Trail Service Area. The intent is to make the groomers available to trail users to share responsibility for trail maintenance. The groomers are available for travelers to hook up and groom any section of trail between the Talkeetna River bridge and the mile 231.7 crossing of the RR tracks. The groomers must stay on the Chase Trail at all times. They are not to be used on private property.



A few notable qualities of the groomers:

1. The groomers are a distinctive bright orange to make it easy to see them in the snow and to distinguish them from other privately-owned groomers. Please only use the orange groomers.
2. The blade is adjustable with a ¾ inch wrench.
3. If the snow is too deep, the hitch can be folded back and the metal U-bolt can be hooked directly to the pintle hitch – allowing the groomer to be transported with the blade off the ground.
4. A pintle hitch is the easiest for hooking up, but you can use it with a flapper hitch also. A shackle or a strong piece of string can be used to attach the groomer to your machine.
5. The groomers are 44’” wide so they will fit across both the Billion Slough bridge and the Talkeetna River bridge.


When you are finished grooming, please leave the groomers tipped on their side so they will not be buried in a snowfall or accidentally run over. Leave them off to the side of the trail so that they do not obstruct traffic. If anyone is interested in purchasing their own groomer to groom there private trails, please contact Mike Wood at 733-8350.

Jan 20th Meeting Notes

Chase Community Council met on Jan 20th to hold elections to fill 3 seats on the board. Mike Wood, Peg Foster and Jeff Olsen were elected.
The Chase Homeowners assc, has donated money to the Chase Community Council to buy a drag to be used in the CCC area.
Ideas were discussed for the revenue sharing money from the state, managed by the borough. Mike Wood is working with engineers at the Alaska Railroad to have the trail between the 2 bridges reengineered to avoid future flood issues.
All agreed that this is our main priority.
Chase Trail Maintence has purchased two trails, which will be used by everyone to groom the Chase Trail from town to the gravel pit.

Quarterly Meeting to Elect Board Members 1-21-10

There will be a meeting of the Chase community Council on Wed. 1/21/10 at 6 PM at the Roadhouse. Some of the items on the agenda are the election of the two board members that held 1 year seats, discussion about the long term parking lot next to the well, the update of the chase comprehensive plan, whether to do a 501 C3, signage for the trail and the impact of tourism in the Chase area. Tentative dates of future meetings are 4/1, 9/16 and 12/18. All interested parties are encouraged to attend.

Meeting with CCC, TCC and Borough about Parking

This is just a head's up to let you know that two MSB guys, Ralph Naffziger
and Dan Keyes will be at the Talkeetna Community Council December meeting to discuss the parking situation for the Chase residents who use the parking lots at the head of the Chase Trail.
The Borough requested a meeting with the Chase Community Council and the Talkeetna Community Council to try to start working out guidelines etc. for the Chase resident parking lot.

All interested parties are encouraged to attend.
Time and Place- Monday Dec.7th at 7 o'clock at the Talkeetna Elementary School.

Don't worry Beth, I've received other requests like yours and we won't include the Chase Trail...it is not for casual visitors to Talkeetna, that is apparent.

Attached is a recent e-mail sent to a borough employee concerning not putting the Chase Trail on the new Chamber of Commerce Map.
Gale: I am a resident of the Chase area and also on the Community Council .
I understand that you are in the process of Making a Chamber of Commerce Map.
We residents of the Chase Area request that our trail not be put on your Map for several reasons.
1. The walkway that we use to access the trail is owned by the railroad. The railroad doesn't even want us using their walkway for access but is begrudgingly letting us use it. If you advertise our trail and we get a lot of non-residents and tourists just joy riding and exploring up here you will jeopardize our privilege of using the walkway to get home. Thus leaving us with no way to get to town which would be a safety issue.
2. This trail is like a driveway to our houses all the trails end in peoples dooryards. This makes it that the people you funnel up here by advertising our trail end up trespassing on private land. People up here are not all that welcoming to strangers and very much oppose them showing up unexpectedly at our houses.
3. We have been maintaining this trail by our taxes paid to the borough and volunteer community effort not public funds mainly so that our trail which in essence is like our driveways doesn't get advertised and end up being someone's play ground.
4. Advertising our trail could also lead to vandalism and crime in our area.

Chase Community News

Just wanted to keep everyone informed on what the Chase Community Council has been working on.

We met with Mayor Curt Maynard on Feb 28th. We wanted his advice on how we should go about protecting our lifestyle by not having the Talkeetna River Railroad bridge walkway widened. He assured us by forming the CCC was a good step in the right direction since we would be recognized by the borough. He also suggested we contact our local representatives Mark Neuman and Charlie Huggins to let them know we did not want the walkway widened and also we don’t want them to secure any funding from the budget to fund a safety study. I have been trying to talk to Mr Neuman, he was in Wa and then Juneau…he forward a letter to me from the President of AKRR, Pat Gamble stating they won’t be widening the walkway in the future but wants the state to build a new bridge to connect to the Chase Trail.

We also met with Eileen Probasco at (planning dept) to ask about when we would be officially recognized by the borough. Hopefully by April the assembly will be able to do that. She also suggested that we review the Chase Comprensive Plan and make amendments where needed.

We also talked with another borough employee about how we reinstate the mil tax that funds our trail maintaince fund. Which we will have to address at our next meeting.
